Banned: Sleeper Troll

Yes, friends, I am a “sleeper troll” according to FreeRepublic.com who has banned me from replying to articles there.

A troll is some posts a message for the purpose of starting an argument that is irrelevant, but long and persistent. In my case, I tried to refute some of their silliness, by pretending to be one of them while asking probing questions or presenting refuting evidence.

I am guilty of being a “sleeper” but I will not agree to the “troll” part. My motivation was not to start an argument, it was to correct misinformation.

Whatever their reasons, I am banned  (not that bans are ever really effective, but I will respect their wishes and not post there). If they want to have misinformation on their site, with many like-minded people sharing a false sense of reality, that is their right.

Looks like folks just aren’t welcome sometimes. See here for another experience.

I remember the Freepers well, from the 2000 election.

My brother and I posted statistical analyses of the Florida Election on my personal website. When that website got mentioned in an internet political discussion forum, it was subsequently “freeped” and my hosting company shut it down, because it far exceeded the bandwidth I had paid for. I moved it several times to different hosting services (keeping the same domain address, so that the analyses were still visible), and finally gave up…

Analysis of the hits against the original website showed a steady increase in the number of hits after it was mentioned in the discussion forum. Then, hours later, within minutes after someone urged that it be “freeped” on FreeRepublic.com, it was inundated with an instant increase of many orders of magnitude in the number of hits.

Reach your own conclusions about how many of those hits were people interested in the content of the analysis…

I wrote that before I found out what FreeRepublic.com is. If I knew then what I know now, I would NEVER have posted on that site. It is a crummy-looking web site, but it’s also a very powerful one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeRepublic.com

Did you know Barack Obama was adopted, and his “mother” was a CIA spy from Lebanon?
