Little fires

When we use fossil fuels for energy, we leave a carbon footprint. Even though I drive a Prius, it still burns gas. But what got to me was when I realized the carbon emissions from everything else I do.
I started walking around the house viewing each device consuming energy as a little fire pouring a [...]

Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete under Windows 7

With great trepidation, I embarked on what I figured would be a painful journey trying to get my favorite game working under Windows 7. I thought I would be clever and install it under the “Windows XP Mode” virtual machine. It installed, but crashed when I ran it.
Next I tried to install it native directly [...]

Ad nonsense

419 is the section of the Nigerian criminal code dealing with the email scams we all see in our inbox from time to time. I did a Google search on “419 scam” and found some information. But in addition, Google Ad Sense advertising returned this jewel:

FireFox browser trashes Windows users

A tiny group of FireFox developers have pushed out a blocklist that automatically installs itself without permission, that cannot be rejected and cannot be removed. And by so doing, they knowingly prevented mission critical applications based on Microsoft’s Windows Presentation Foundation from working.
I think this unilateral action by FireFox is outrageous. What were they thinking?
[This [...]

Mark Sanford must go

Looking towards a run for president in 2012, Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina played games refusing to accept stimulus funds from the federal government to boost his right-wing credentials, while ignoring the second highest unemployment rate in the country.
Now we see Sanford went off the radar for a whole week, telling his staff he [...]

Paul R. Vaulin

For some reason, I typed in the name of one of my college professors, from 40 years ago, Paul R. Vaulin, into a search engine. Sad to say, he died in 2007. It’s no surprise, since he was about 89 years old. Still it’s a shock when a part of my past winks out.
I have [...]

Star Trek

Saw the new movie, Star Trek. It was very entertaining. While there were a few hat tips to the TV series, the movie didn’t over do it.
I was prepared to suspend belief and to go along for the ride. I give it two thumbs up. I really appreciated the closing music. It was a nice [...]

I really like my new iPhone

I particularly like the ease with which I can find and download apps. It has an iPod built in. It does lots of stuff.
I didn’t think it would be as useful as it it. I’ve had phones with Internet access before, and PDA’s but this is better than either AND it’s both in one case.
The [...]

Banned: Sleeper Troll

Yes, friends, I am a “sleeper troll” according to FreeRepublic.com who has banned me from replying to articles there.
A troll is some posts a message for the purpose of starting an argument that is irrelevant, but long and persistent. In my case, I tried to refute some of their silliness, by pretending to be one [...]

Am I a Citizen?

Reading some of the discussion of the fourteenth amendment and juristiction on the Internet, it makes me wonder.
I was born in the United States, as was my father and his father before him, but my great grandfather was not.
Heinrich and Helena emigrated to the United States around 1900, citizens of Germany. I do not know [...]
